Fortunately we have this simply written and illustrated book as an introduction and a way to spark an interest in our new little green thumbs!
Of course nothing sparked their interest more than this caterpillar who has been eating and living on our carrot tops! We think it is one of the babies of the black swallow-tailed butterfly we saw fluttering around earlier in the summer!
After watching things grow it is always exciting to get to pick them when they are finally ready.
Teacher- "Why is that one carrot hairy?"
Child- "Oh, that's the daddy."
Preparation is also a nice treat. At Discovery we love to cook with the children, it is often an exciting experience as one child said,
-"I'm just like mommy making supper!'
At the same time they are learning real life skills while they do something fun. A popular comment from these 4-5 year olds is how much work it really is to prepare food straight from the plant!
Note: we ALWAYS have a teacher assisting the children when sharp knives are involved. We also go over a few basic tips and rules about knife safety before the children are permitted to start cutting. The children have to point out with side of the knife is the sharp edge, discuss what could happen if we were to reach onto someone else's cutting board, and always putting our knife down before doing anything but cutting (talking to someone, putting their chopped pieces in the bowl, moving hair out of their face, scratching an itch, etc.).

Not everyone wanted to try the soup but we talked about how brave it is to try new things and how we can't really know if we like something if we have never tried it and almost EVERYONE DID!
